To be courageous, someone does not need to hold a weapon, they need to complete a task, even when they know the possible outcomes from the beginning. This novel by Harper Lee is told through the eyes of Scout Finch, a young girl who is surrounded by racism and poverty. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses characterization to portray Jem Finch as protective through him constantly telling Scout uplifting things, stopping her from things she should not be doing, and the act of putting her needs before his.
Jem Finch is a father figure to Scout and protects her emotions. Jems statement shows he worries about his younger sister and wants to protect her from the mysterious Radleys. Scouts lack of responsibility can put even more pressure on Jem because he strives to make Atticus proud.
Jem is caring and protective when Atticus is not around. This is highlighted when Miss. Jems act of keeping Scout warm shows that he know his responsibility as a big brother. It also displays that he cares about his sister's needs and will be a father figure to Scout when Atticus is not around. Without realising it, when Jem reads to her he is helping her to overcome her addiction.
Her decision is even more courageous when it becomes apparent that there really is no need for her to go through the pain of being morphine free as she is going to die anyway. However, she does it for her own personal satisfaction as she does not want to be addicted to the drug at the time of her death. Mrs Dubose is being courageous but very few people in Maycomb will even know she is going through a very difficult personal battle to beat her addiction. Atticus feels this makes her even braver and this is why he wants Jem and Scout to witness what she is doing.
He wants them to understand that being courageous sometimes means doing difficult things that other people will never understand or will criticise you for. Atticus knows he must defend Tom Robinson. He feels he could never be proud of himself again or expect Jem and Scout to trust him again if he did not. Atticus to Scout. Here Atticus is telling Scout that if he lacked the courage to defend Tom Robinson in his trial then he would not be a very good lawyer or a very good father.
He is being courageous in defending Tom and he wants Jem and Scout to understand how important it is that he does the right thing. Scout and Jem are amazed that their father is so talented when using a gun but they are shocked that he has chosen to keep this skill away from them. It was a rabid dog and was very close to the Radley House Novels. If he would not have shot dog, it could have harmed his family or neighbors. This scene shows that he is courageous and will do anything to protect his family. He knew that there would most likely be people that would come to harm Robinson, but he had the courage to protect him. He said he never had a gun and his father didn't like them.
